Lucian Freud in Vienna

Selected works by celebrated British portraitist Lucian Freud (1922-2011) will be on show in Austria for the first time at the Kunsthistorisches Museum from October 8, 2013.

The exhibition, designed in close cooperation with the artist himself in the weeks and months before his death in July 2011, includes examples of Freud's work from all stages of a prolific career spanning 70 years.

This show at the Kunsthistorisches Museum brings together all of the pictures deemed by the artist to be his most important works for the very first time. The paintings on show in Vienna include a number of his best-known pieces, including portraits of family members, Queen Elizabeth II, and artists such as Francis Bacon, as well as selected self-portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

The exhibition consists of various loan pieces from some of the world's leading museums, including the Tate Modern in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.

Lucian Freud, one the most important painters of the post-war period, was the grandson of Viennese psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
