The Only Wildlife Sanctuary in Tanzania – Safari & Beach – Up to 40% Off

Tanzania is best known for its mainstream safari areas, in particular the northern safari circuit – which includes the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. However, there are still places to go in Tanzania that are largely untouched by commercial tourism, including the lesser-known Tarangire National Park and the recently gazette Saadani National Park which are perfect for travellers who want to get well off the beaten track and see some really remote locations!

Saadani National Park

This recently gazetted national park lies to the north of Dar es Salaam and it provides an interesting option for those wanting to experience something entirely different to what is available in any other East African national park!

The only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the sea, this stunning little park consists primarily of coastal vegetation and forest along the coastline, and is the only place where guests can enjoy a safari-and-beach experience in one – hippo and elephant are often seen taking a dip in the ocean.

The climate is coastal, hot and humid, and offers a unique combination of both marine and mainland flora and fauna. Expect to see about 30 species of larger animals including lions and the aforementioned hippo and elephants, as well as numerous reptiles and birds, a huge variety of fish, Green turtles, dolphins and even humpback whales in the ocean nearby. Boating safaris along the Wami River are also a great option here, giving visitors the chance to take in the park’s brilliant birdlife!

A visit to Saadani will likely be a very personalised experience, with just two lodge options available:

Sanctuary Saadani Safari Lodge is located on the beach in the middle of the Saadani National Park; where you can experience untamed, untouched East Africa combined with the beauty of the Indian Ocean. The lodge's fifteen suites each open directly on to the sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean, with verandas overlooking the beach, providing in intoxicating combination of luxury safari with a relaxing beach jaunt.  The lodge offers a variety of activities ranging from traditional game drives to sand bank picnics to a tour of the nearby Maasai Community Tour. The sandy beach is also home to fishermen reeling in their daily catch.

Hidden upstream within the trees bordering the Wami River is Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge. The spectacular views from the lodge allow guests to watch the local wildlife while enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seventeen suites are the epitome of luxury, naturally. Each guest tree house blends into the natural scenery on stilts with traditional thatched roofs. In addition, for the ultimate secluded escape, the Wami Suite is a private villa with its own infinity pool, two bedrooms and bathrooms, a living room and dining room.  Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge offers guests a great range of activities including game drives and river excursions, and the in-house spa provides indulgent massages to enjoy between activities.

Tarangire National Park

Located slightly off the main safari route, Tarangire is the surprise package on the Northern circuit. Best known for its elephant migration and an exceptional concentration of game from July through to October, Tangire is often overshadowed by the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, attracting a fraction of the visitor numbers, leaving swathes of Tarangire virtually untouched! For this reason, this seasonal Tanzania safari park is a little gem on the Northern safari circuit – especially if you love elephants!

Sanctuary Swala Camp is located in the heart of Maasai country, in a remote corner of the Tarangire, in total seclusion amongst giant acacia trees looking out beyond the flat savannah. Voted as #1 out of 18 lodges and camps in the Tarangire National Park the picturesque landscape is filled with ancient baobab trees, ambling elephants and birds in flight, with a variety of activities on offer include walking and night game drives. The Camp’s spectacular infinity swimming pool is also a key attraction, overlooking a water hole frequented by game.
