Sydney’s Blue Mountains are calling you back

In October 2014, it appeared to the world, that the whole of the historic, heritage listed Blue Mountains was burning to the ground, destroying not only the vegetation but, all the major attractions, accommodation, businesses and homes in its wake.

The fires were deemed the ‘worst natural disaster in the Blue Mountains history and, in the fallout that followed, local and international bookings for future vacations, daytrips and functions were cancelled and, local businesses were left devastated.

The area is visited each year by more than 4 million people and generates over $500 million but, as the tourists stayed away, many businesses had to lay off workers or at least reduce hours.  It was horrendous and an estimated loss of over $100 million resulted.

As someone who traveled to the area just weeks after the devastating fires, I could not believe that on the journey from Sydney to the mountains, not even one burnt bush could be seen.

While 196 homes were completely destroyed and over 130 others sustained significant damage, the fires did not devastate the main tourist towns of Leura and Katoomba.

Now a year on, while it is an important time to acknowledge the impact of the bushfires, to mark the process of recovery, and to honour the resilience of those affected communities, it is also time to return.

The message from locals is clear and simple.  It is business as usual, and they want everyone to come back.

With a residential population of 79,225 homed in 27 towns & villages spread across 100km it is one of the most mountainous regions in New South Wales, Australia.  It borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, its foothills starting about 50 kilometres west of the state capital, Canberra.

During winter, the temperature is typically around 10 to 11 °C in the daytime however, in summer if offers relief from the humidity of Sydney with beautifully warm days and cooler nights.

Here are some highlights not to be missed on your next visit…

Katoomba

Katoomba is the most visited town in the Blue Mountains and a visit would not be complete without viewing the spectacular Three Sisters at Echo Point.  The Three Sisters are also floodlit at night and look even more stunning – if that is possible – set against the black background of the night sky.

The famous Giant Stairway is also found at Echo Point. If you are enthusiastic and energetic, you can take the 800 steps down to the floor of the valley.  Here there is a wonderful walk you can take across the valley floor to Scenic World.

The Scenic Railway is the steepest railway incline in the world and is now one of the most popular man-made tourist attractions in Australia. The ride takes you down the steep decent past Orphan Rock, through a tunnel and the beautiful fern-damp cliff face.

Adjacent to the Scenic Railway is the Scenic Cableway, the steepest aerial cable car in Australia. The Scenic Cableway takes you on a 545-metre ride into the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area rainforest of the Jamison valley.

Scenic World also features a spectacular Scenic Walkway. A popular option for visitors is to descend into the valley via the Scenic Railway, stroll along the Scenic Walkway and ascend to the top via the Scenic Cableway.

If you are looking for accommodation in Katoomba we highly recommend the Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa Retreat.  This 4½ star, multi award winning hotel and spa offers delightful rooms and some of the most stunning mountain vistas.

Medlow Bath

The Hydro Majestic has been lovingly restored to reflect its rich heritage and the glamour of yesteryear and from Tuesday 23 December, you can enjoy a romantic rendezvous, girls getaway or family escape from $179.  Our tip – head into the Cat's Alley bar and enjoy sipping on a cocktail or two whilst taking in the majestic sun set views.  For more information or to book visit the Hydro Majestic website.

Leura

Leura – Aboriginal for ‘lava’ – has been given the name of ‘The Jewel in the Mountains Crown’ and is also known as ‘The Garden Village.  In fact many volcanic stones have been found in the area.

Leura and its Shopping Mall itself is a treasure, with many fine coffee shops, restaurants and galleries.

Leura also hosts one of Australia's finest Toy and Railway Museums. The museum is located within the Leuralla mansion and features Australia’s largest collection of toys, dolls, teddy bears and model railways.

A great way to get around these two towns is via the hop on hop off Blue Mountains Explorer Bus or Trolley.  Both offer an hourly service that stops at over 28 spots in and around Katoomba and Leura.

Blackheath

This is a gorgeous little town and the highest mountain town at 1,025-metres above sea level. While there visit the Victory Theatre. While the building is no longer used as a theatre, the owners have transformed it into a spectacular antique centre, which is certainly worth browsing through.  On the outside of the is one of the town’s proudest displays, a colourful mural designed by Australian fashionista and artist, Jenny Kee and painted in 1985 by members of the local community

In November enjoy their ‘Rhododendron Festival’ and if looking for accommodation you can’t go past the stunning 28 acre heritage property, Parklands Country Gardens and Spa.   This retreat is elegant, with a ‘New Hampton’s’ feel and is reminiscent of a grand European estate.  The location is also close to Govett’s Leap lookout and some beautiful walks.

Falconbridge

A must do when coming up to the mountains is to schedule a stop off at the Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum with its priceless artworks and memorabilia  – make sure you also visit Lindsay’s Café and try their home made and delicious scones, jam and cream.  For more visit their website.

Mt. Tomah

A visit to the Blue Moutains area would not be complete without a visit to the Botanic Gardens at Mount Tomah.  Here you can explore the highest botanic garden in Australia situated at 1,000 metres above sea level.  Stroll through rainforest and gardens and marvel at the ancient conifers, giant redwoods and colourful flowering plants that are there through all seasons.  There’s a restaurant too and on-site accommodation for up to 10 people in a secluded Jungle lodge.   For more visit the website.

Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls is one of the most beautiful towns within the Blue Mountains offering possibly the most spectacular bushwalks and views.

Jenolan Caves

While the Blue Mountains often portray Jenolan Caves as one of its own tourist attractions, Jenolan Caves is actually part of the spectacular Oberon area. It is however within easy reach of the Mountains making it ideal for a day trip.

Open daily; the award-winning caves are one of Australia’s national treasures – the world’s oldest and Australia’s most awe-inspiring caves, with dazzling formations and pure underground rivers.

You can tour any one of up to 10 show caves, each astonishing in its own way.  There is a cave tour to suit people of all ages and fitness levels.  With prior notice, there is even limited wheelchair access.  After spending the day exploring amazing caves, treat yourself to dinner and overnight stay in atmospheric hotel, Jenolan Caves House. You can choose from a range of accommodation – grand historic guesthouse, modern Mountain Lodge rooms, budget Gate House backpacker rooms or self-contained cottages.  Upstairs you can relax at Jeremiah's Bar and dine at award-winning Chisholm’s Restaurant.
