‘We Are Handsome’ exclusive limited edition scarf captures NZ

Fashion meets travel – how Wellington & Marlborough inspired the creation of new limited edition scarf, 'The Beacon'

Australian designers, Jeremy and Katinka Somers, the duo behind the 'We Are Handsome' brand have designed a limited edition scarf to pay tribute to and capture the beauty of New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. These scarf's are loved by celebrities Beyoncé, Diane Kruger and Rihanna to name but a few as they are so lightweight and easy to pack in a handbag, yet big enough to wear as a wrap.

The scarf’s name, ‘The Beacon’ was inspired by the Marlborough magical sunsets and means a source of light.  It will be added to their vibrant summer 2015/2016 collection. ‘The Beacon’ scarf would make the perfect travel accessory for summer adventures across the Tasman

The designers, Jeremy and Katinka Somers said they absolutely loved New Zealand and jumped at the chance to inject some of Marlborough’s splendour into their latest summer range.

“We Are Handsome is an expression of all things beautiful in life and the wonder of travel is ingrained in everything we do. The Marlborough region presented such a huge palate for inspiration with its sweeping landscapes of the Sounds and memorable sunsets.

“The scarf is one of our favourite accessories we’ve created to date.”

Tourism New Zealand General Manager, Australia Tony Saunders says it’s exciting to align with renowned Australian designers to showcase the amazing range of experiences on offer in New Zealand.

“Wellington and Marlborough are known for incredible culinary and cultural experiences as well as unforgettable scenery.

On their journey to Marlborough, Jeremy and Katinka visited Wellington’s oldest and most vibrant food market Harbourside Market – guided by inspirational local food writer Beth Brash. The pair then cruised with Interislander across Cook Strait to Marlborough, known as one of the world’s most scenic ferry journeys.

In Marlborough they met with Ben and Luc Cowley owners of Auntsfield Estate, who shared with them how Marlborough’s unique landscape and climate have motivated winemakers to create world-renowned wines.

They then explored the Marlborough Sounds, relaxed aboard the luxury launch Tarquin, spotted dolphins and sampled fresh local cuisine as the sunset. It was these moments that shaped the design of the scarf.

Destination Marlborough General Manager Tracy Johnston said ‘The Beacon’ scarf  is a brilliant reflection of the region.

“Jeremy and Katinka discovered how close and accessible everything really is here. From sampling some of Marlborough’s premier wines to matching this with fresh seafood while cruising the Marlborough Sounds – the perfect combination for an inspiring journey.”

We took a moment to get some insider tips on things they enjoyed…

Q. What are your favourite places to eat in Wellington/Marlborough regions?

A. We stopped in at a local pub in Picton that serves the freshest and most inventive pizza's – we indulged in an anchovy laden delight.

Q. What are your favourite New Zealand wines?

We love the Marlborough wine Sauvignon Blanc varietals, they are so crisp and delicious and a huge hit paired with seafood.

Q. What are your favourite places to shop in Wellington/Marlborough regions?

A. We love trying local culinary delights and so we really enjoyed the fresh produce market. We had the best smoothies and dutch waffles there!

Q. Which elements of your trip to Wellington & Marlborough inspired the new scarf?

A. We spent the day on the Marlborough sounds and watched as the sun slipped behind the ranges, and in so doing a sensational palette of colours revealed the contours and striations of the land and water. It was breathtaking and we had to capture that on our head scarf.

Q. Do you have any general style tips for people travelling this summer?

A. We love mixing and matching prints. There are no rules, clashing colours and textures make for interesting style. Do what you feel is good, not just what's 'on trend'.

Q. What are your essentials to take when you go travelling?

A. We never leave without our sunglasses, trainers, sunscreen and of course a good selection of swim and active outfits to explore the land and sea!
